An aluminium door can be painted successfully when the surface is cleaned, lightly abraded, primed with a coating suitable for non-ferrous metal, and covered with compatible finish coats. Existing powder coating, anodizing, oxidation, grease, and loose paint must be identified before work begins.
Painting directly over an unprepared aluminium surface often leads to peeling, uneven gloss, weak adhesion, or visible brush marks.

The preparation method depends on which finish is present.
A sound factory coating may only require cleaning, controlled abrasion, and a compatible bonding primer. Loose, blistered, or flaking paint must be removed until the remaining surface is stable.
Anodized aluminium is particularly smooth and requires a primer developed for difficult non-ferrous surfaces.
When the coating type is unknown, test the complete paint system on a concealed area before treating the whole door.
Take off removable handles, cylinders, escutcheons, weather seals, door closers, and decorative accessories when practical.
Label the hardware so it returns to the correct position.
Protect the following areas carefully:
Glass
Gaskets
Locks
Hinges
Rollers
Drainage openings
Thresholds
Wall surfaces
Identification labels
Do not paint moving lock components, sealing surfaces, drainage slots, or the contact area between the door and weather gasket.
Paint buildup around hinges and locks can change the operating clearance.
Wash away dust, grease, adhesive residue, salt deposits, and household cleaner.
Use a mild detergent and a non-abrasive cloth. Rinse the surface and allow it to dry fully.
Areas near the handle usually contain skin oils that are not visible but can interfere with coating adhesion.
After washing, use a suitable degreaser recommended for the selected primer. Change cloths regularly instead of spreading contamination across the door.
Never mix cleaning chemicals. Strong acidic or alkaline products can damage aluminium, glass, seals, and nearby building materials.
Lightly abrade the aluminium using fine abrasive paper or a suitable nonwoven pad.
The goal is to create a uniform key for the primer rather than remove excessive metal.
Sand in a controlled direction and feather the edges of existing paint. Remove all dust before applying the next coating.
Deep scratches, dents, and damaged joints may require professional repair. Ordinary wood filler is not suitable for flexible exterior aluminium surfaces.
Corrosion or coating failure around lower corners should be investigated before painting. Water trapped inside the door, blocked drainage, or incompatible metal contact can cause the problem to return beneath the new finish.
Use an etch primer, epoxy primer, or bonding primer specifically approved for aluminium and the planned topcoat.
Apply thin, even coats within the temperature and humidity range stated by the coating manufacturer.
Excessive primer thickness can cause:
Slow curing
Runs
Soft coating
Poor topcoat adhesion
Visible texture
Pay attention to edges and recessed profiles, but do not allow paint to block drainage or hardware openings.
Observe the required drying and recoating time. Applying the finish coat too early or after the maximum recoat window can reduce adhesion.
Exterior doors need a finish designed for UV exposure, temperature changes, rain, and routine cleaning.
Spraying normally produces the most uniform result on complex Aluminium Profiles. A small foam roller or high-quality brush can be used for suitable renovation work.
Apply several controlled coats rather than one heavy coat.
Keep the door partly open during painting so wet surfaces do not bond to the frame. Follow a planned sequence to maintain a wet edge and reduce lap marks.
Check the coating from several angles for:
Missed corners
Runs
Dust contamination
Uneven gloss
Thin edges
Paint inside hardware openings
Allow the coating to cure before reinstalling seals and frequently operated hardware.
Site painting is useful for renovation, local repair, or changing the color of an existing door.
For a new project or repeated product programme, factory-applied powder coating or another controlled finish usually provides greater consistency.
