How To Install Lock on Aluminium Sliding Door?

An aluminium sliding door lock must match the door profile, glass position, frame depth, sliding direction, and existing hardware. Installing a lock is not simply a matter of drilling two holes and tightening several screws.

The locking body, handle, cylinder, hook, and keeper must align correctly when the door reaches the closed position. If the lock is installed too high, too low, or too deep inside the profile, the hook may not enter the keeper fully. The door may appear locked while remaining loose or easy to force open.

Before starting, identify the door system and confirm that the selected lock is designed for an aluminium sliding door.

Identify the Existing Door and Lock Structure

Aluminium sliding doors use several common locking structures:

  • Hook mortise locks

  • Sliding-door latch locks

  • Key-operated handle locks

  • Multi-point locking systems

  • Surface-mounted patio bolts

  • Child-safety locks

  • Flush pull locks

A direct replacement is usually easier than changing to a completely different lock type because the door may already have cut-outs for the lock body, spindle, cylinder, and fixing screws.

Inspect the Aluminium Stile

The vertical section holding the lock is commonly called the lock stile.

Measure:

  • Stile width

  • Internal cavity depth

  • Existing faceplate dimensions

  • Distance from the door edge to the handle center

  • Screw-hole spacing

  • Cylinder position

  • Hook projection

  • Keeper position on the frame

Do not assume that two locks with similar handles use the same internal dimensions.

Check the Glass Position Before Drilling

Many aluminium sliding doors use narrow profiles with glass positioned close to the lock cavity.

Drilling too deeply or in the wrong location can damage the glass, glazing bead, weather seal, or internal reinforcement.

Use the door drawing when available. When the internal structure is unknown, ask the door manufacturer or an experienced installer to confirm the safe fixing area.

Do Not Modify the Glass

The lock should be installed through the Aluminium Profile and approved hardware openings. Do not drill, cut, or grind the glass to make a standard lock fit.

A lock that requires glass modification is normally unsuitable for that door.

Tools Commonly Required

The exact tools depend on the lock, but a normal installation may require:

  • Tape measure

  • Pencil or removable marker

  • Lock template

  • Screwdrivers

  • Drill with suitable metal bits

  • Center punch

  • File for light edge finishing

  • Hex keys

  • Protective tape

  • Vacuum or brush for metal particles

  • Safety glasses

  • Suitable fixing screws

A router or cutting tool may be required for a new mortise opening, but this work should be completed carefully because aluminium profiles can contain several internal chambers.

Step 1: Secure the Door

Close the door and confirm that it slides smoothly before modifying the lock.

If the rollers are badly adjusted or the door is sagging, correct that problem first. A lock should not be used to pull a misaligned door into position.

Support the moving panel so that it cannot roll unexpectedly while measurements are being taken.

Step 2: Mark the Lock Position

Place the lock template against the lock stile.

Check that:

  • The handle remains comfortable to reach

  • The lock body fits inside the profile

  • The hook points toward the correct keeper position

  • The cylinder does not interfere with the glass

  • The screws enter suitable aluminium sections

  • The handle does not collide with the fixed panel

Measure twice before making the first hole.

Use the Closed Door as the Reference

The lock and keeper must meet when the door is fully closed.

Do not position the keeper from a general measurement alone. Mark the actual hook or latch center against the frame after the lock body is temporarily fitted.

Step 3: Drill Pilot Holes

Apply protective tape over the drilling area to reduce marking and help make the layout more visible.

Use a center punch gently so the bit does not move across the finished surface. Drill small pilot holes first, then enlarge them only to the size required by the hardware instructions.

Remove metal chips immediately. Loose aluminium particles can enter the track, rollers, lock body, or drainage openings.

Step 4: Prepare the Lock Opening

For a mortise lock, the opening must fit the faceplate and internal lock body without excessive clearance.

File sharp edges lightly and check that the lock slides into the profile without force.

Avoid removing more aluminium than necessary. An oversized opening can weaken the fixing area and leave visible gaps around the faceplate.

Step 5: Install the Lock Body and Handle

Insert the lock body and fasten it using the specified screws.

Fit the inside and outside handles, spindle, cylinder, or thumb turn according to the lock design.

Before fully tightening the screws:

  1. Operate the handle several times.

  2. Check that the hook extends and retracts completely.

  3. Confirm that the cylinder turns smoothly.

  4. Make sure the lock does not move inside the profile.

  5. Check that the handle returns to its normal position.

Over-tightening can distort thin aluminium sections or compress the mechanism.

Step 6: Fit and Align the Keeper

Close the door gently and mark where the hook meets the frame.

Install the keeper so the hook enters the opening without rubbing heavily against the top, bottom, or sides.

The keeper should hold the panel securely without forcing the door sideways.

Check Roller Adjustment

When the hook does not align, inspect the door height before moving the keeper repeatedly.

Worn or incorrectly adjusted rollers can cause the panel to sit lower on one side. Correct roller alignment helps the lock remain consistent as the door is opened and closed.

Step 7: Test the Complete Door

Test the lock from both sides when the product allows access from inside and outside.

Confirm that:

  • The door slides freely when unlocked

  • The hook retracts fully

  • The door closes without impact

  • The lock engages without excessive force

  • The panel cannot move significantly when locked

  • The key can be removed normally

  • The handle does not contact the fixed panel

  • The emergency exit remains usable

Test the door several times rather than accepting one successful operation.

Common Installation Mistakes

Avoid the following problems:

  • Selecting a lock before measuring the profile

  • Drilling close to the glass

  • Installing the keeper before checking door height

  • Using screws that are too long

  • Blocking drainage paths

  • Leaving metal particles in the track

  • Forcing a wide lock into a narrow stile

  • Using the lock to correct a sagging door

  • Adding a secondary lock that obstructs emergency exit

For multi-point locks, large commercial doors, or unfamiliar profile systems, professional installation is recommended.
