Aluminium Window frames can be painted, but the new finish will only perform well when the existing surface is prepared correctly.
Most modern aluminium windows already have a factory-applied finish such as powder coating, anodizing, or another protective surface treatment. New paint must bond to that existing surface rather than directly to untreated aluminium.
Simply brushing household wall paint over a smooth window frame often results in poor adhesion, visible brush marks, or peeling around frequently touched areas.
Before selecting paint, determine what is already on the frame.
Powder coating normally has a smooth and uniform appearance. It is applied and cured during factory production.
A sound powder-coated surface may be repainted after it has been cleaned, lightly deglossed, and prepared with a compatible primer and topcoat.
Anodizing forms a controlled oxide layer on the aluminium.
This surface can be more difficult for ordinary paint to grip, so the primer and preparation system must be suitable for anodized metal.
Older frames may already contain one or more liquid-paint layers.
Loose, chalking, or peeling paint must be removed before a new coating is applied. Painting over a failing layer will not restore the bond underneath.
Repainting may be practical when:
The existing color no longer suits the building
The finish is faded but the frame remains sound
A renovation requires coordinated colors
Minor surface scratches need improvement
Replacement would cause unnecessary disruption
The window operates correctly
Painting is less suitable when the frame is severely distorted, heavily corroded, leaking, structurally damaged, or no longer seals properly.
A new finish cannot repair failed hardware, worn weatherstripping, broken thermal barriers, or poor installation.
Open and close the window before beginning.

Complete mechanical repairs first. Otherwise, newly painted surfaces may be damaged during later hardware work.

Paint on seals can make them rigid or sticky. Paint inside tracks and lock openings may interfere with operation.
Aluminium window systems often contain drainage routes that allow collected water to leave the frame.
These openings must remain clear. Paint, filler, dust, or masking material should not close them.
Remove dust, grease, hand oils, insect residue, smoke deposits, and cleaning-product residue.
Use a mild cleaning method suitable for the existing finish. Rinse the frame and allow it to dry completely.
Paint applied over grease or silicone contamination may separate even when the surface has been sanded.
Dirt often remains around:
Glazing beads
Handle bases
Frame corners
Sash overlaps
Track edges
Screw heads
Exterior drainage areas
Use a soft brush or cloth rather than sharp tools that can scratch the glass or seals.
Peeling paint and loose oxidation should be removed until a stable edge remains.
Small exposed aluminium areas require appropriate preparation before priming. Deep corrosion, pitting, or weakened frame sections should be assessed by a window professional.
Do not grind aggressively near the glass. Vibrations and tool contact may damage glazing or seals.
A smooth factory finish usually needs light abrasion so the primer can grip the surface.
Use a fine abrasive pad or suitable fine sandpaper and work evenly.
The aim is to remove gloss, not to grind deeply into the aluminium. After abrasion, remove every trace of dust.
Bare aluminium and difficult factory finishes normally require a primer made for aluminium or non-ferrous metal.
The primer must also be compatible with the chosen topcoat.
Apply thin, even coverage rather than one heavy layer. Follow the product instructions for drying time, recoating, temperature, and ventilation.
Spraying can create a smoother appearance, while brushing may be more practical for small areas. A small foam roller can also be used on broad flat sections when the coating permits it.
Whichever method is selected:
Apply thin coats
Avoid runs around corners
Keep the coating out of tracks
Maintain clean edges near seals
Allow each layer to dry
Do not close the window too early
Several controlled coats normally produce a better result than one thick application.
Dry paint is not always fully cured paint.
Avoid aggressive cleaning, closing the sash tightly, or operating locks repeatedly until the coating has reached the required cure stage.
Removing masking tape at the correct time also helps produce clean edges without tearing the new coating.
A site-applied paint finish and factory powder coating are not identical processes.
